What is IYENGAR® Yoga

IYENGAR Yoga is taught in more than 80 countries and is known for its effectiveness; it takes its name from the method created by Master B.K.S. Iyengar.

Over more than seventy years of complete dedication to yoga, Master B.K.S. Iyengar studied the practice and effects of Asanas (postures) and Pranayama (breathing control techniques), as tools to prepare the body, nervous system and mind for Pratyahara (techniques of introspection and control of the senses), Dharana (concentration techniques) and Dhyana (meditation techniques).

Teaching methods and props in IYENGAR® Yoga

With the aim of making yoga accessible to everyone, B.K.S. Iyengar was the first to develop a specific teaching methodology and to introduce the use of props such as blankets, belts, cushions, chairs, blocks and others. Thanks to these, even people who are less flexible or physically weaker can perform the postures and experience their desired effects on the organs and nervous system.

The benefits of IYENGAR® Yoga

Alignment, precision in the execution, sequencing and duration of the postures are the distinctive features of this method, which acts on a physical, emotional and mental level.

• improves posture and awareness of one’s own body
• harmonises and strengthens the muscles
• improves joint mobility
• benefits the health of the spine
• supports the cardiovascular system
• the internal organs benefit from the stimulation they receive in each posture
• strengthens the immune system
• calms and rebalances the mind

Numerous studies published in international, peer-reviewed medical and scientific journals have investigated the effects of practising Yoga according to the IYENGAR method.

IYENGAR® Yoga is for all

IYENGAR Yoga is non-competitive and can be practised by everyone, at any age.

The practice of Iyengar Yoga helps develop strength, flexibility and balance. The practice is modified according to each individual’s constitution. In this way, each student works to achieve the maximum benefit according to their abilities at any given time.

A distinctive feature of IYENGAR Yoga is the use of props, which, when needed, help practitioners remain in a posture for longer in order to receive the benefits of the practice. IYENGAR teachers are trained to select the most appropriate props and to assist students individually, even in group classes.

Children and adolescents need a vigorous and dynamic practice to learn concentration and develop their bodies harmoniously. Adults, through regular practice, reduce tension, prevent problems affecting the spine, joints and internal organs, and strengthen the nervous system, developing a focused and meditative mind.

In later life, through a specific practice, one learns to keep the body active and the mind alert yet calm, while counteracting the effects of ageing.
